Okami - The Best Bit

It’s especially difficult to single out a defining moment in a game that is so absolutely stuffed with them.

Just one of the many joys of Okami is the delightful ability you possess to incite the bare boughs of cherry blossom trees to burst into full bloom. There’s a satisfying sense of accomplishment as you slowly restore the cursed and barren surroundings back to their natural beauty. It’s a theme that dominates the entire game and feels particularly relevant in this time of environmental crisis.

Feeling partly to blame for climate change?

Fret not.

Dispel any feelings of guilt with a simple stroke of your celestial brush. Feed a few monkeys and paint the world happy. You really can lose yourself in Okami’s eco-friendly adventure.

And while this is certainly one of the games highlights, Digital Gigolo cannot help but think of Catcall Tower when picking his favourite moment.

On a remote island near Ryoshima Coast stands a tower that stretches into the stratosphere. Compelled to investigate by the haunting cries of a cat, the player must begin his epic assent of the tower. It’s an utterly surreal experience as you climb ever higher, through fog and then clouds in a bid to locate the source of the incessant cat calls. A giddy sense of vertigo-inducing altitude sours your stomach as you near the summit. Put one paw wrong and down you go.

After an astonishing ten minute marathon of climbing, you finally reach the peak and meet the tiny cat that prompted your search. Feed him a fish and you’ll be granted the power of Catwalk, a technique needed to reach even further up the tower. At the absolute pinnacle, with the wind blowing in your ears, stands a huge white statue of a cat. There’s now nowhere to go but down.

It’s time to follow one of Okami’s established maxims and ‘leap before you think...'
